Android Platform DistributionHere’s some interesting news on the distribution of various versions of Android across devices.  The Platform Versions page from the official Android Developers website was recently updated with the latest figures collected during the two weeks ending 15 July 2010.

According to the figures, 55.5% of Android devices are running Android 2.1 (Eclair). Coming in second is Android 1.6 (Donut) with 22.1%, followed closely by Android 1.5 (Cupcake) with 18.9%. The latest version, Android 2.2 (Froyo) comes in at a distant 3.3%.

With many new devices now getting Eclair out of the box, and existing devices being updated to it, we should see its share continue to rise. With Froyo, only the Nexus One has received the official OTA update so far. Manufacturers such as HTC, Motorola and Samsung have all announced that Froyo will be coming to their later-model devices but the roll-out will likely be slow, spread across the 3rd and 4th quarters of the year. The more devices that adopt these later versions of Android the better, as it allows developers to create better apps that can fully utilise the added features offered by the newer versions.
