Norton Smartphone Security ScreenshotSymantec has released Norton Smartphone Security for Android. An app designed to protect your smartphone against malware, unwanted calls and text messages and other mobile threats. It also supports remote lock and wipe, a safeguard to protect your private information by allowing you to lock or wipe your phone’s memory remotely if it is lost or stolen. Remote lock and wipe is activated by simply sending a text message to your phone from another device.

Symantec claims the app won’t affect your mobile device’s performance or slow down your web browsing. My own tests with the app running on a Google Nexus One with general usage didn’t disprove their claims.

Norton Smartphone Security will run on devices with Android 2.0 or higher. The app is currently in beta and is free for download (the license will expire after 30 days though) in the Android Market. Just search for “Norton Security” in the Android Market on your device.
