Motorola Droid XYesterday in the U.S. Motorola unveiled the Droid X, the company’s latest flagship Android smartphone. The Droid X is the successor to the original Droid, the phone that brought Motorola back from the brink and repositioned it as a serious player in the mobile phone market.

With the Droid X, Motorola has ditched the slide-out keyboard of the original Droid in favour of a virtual one. This has resulted in a slimmer form factor with a thickness of 9.9 mm which is 3.8 mm thinner than the original. The touchscreen has also grown and is now 4.3-inches but resolution remains the same at 480 x 854. Some of the phone’s other notable features include a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB of internal memory and an 8 megapixel camera that can also record HD video at 720p.

The Motorola Droid X will be sold exclusively through Verizon Wireless in the U.S. from 15 July for USD$199.99 (after a mail-in $100 rebate) on a 2-year contract. As the Droid X is a CDMA phone it won’t work on Australian mobile networks. Hopefully, Motorola will release a GSM version of it sometime in the not too distant future.
